Prof. Dulce Corazon Lacson, CPA, together with 26 Accountancy students attended the regional conference of Certified Public Accountants (CPAs), CPAs in the education sector and student members of the Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA) at the Villa Caceres Hotel, Naga City, this year.

Council of Deans for Business Education – Region V (CODBE-RV), in partnership with the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) Bicol Regional Council, sponsored the said event in line with this year’s national theme— “LEAP and BEAT the ODDS”.

Hon. Atty. Joel L. Tan-Torres, chairman, PRC board of accountancy, Ma.   Melrose D. Macandog, PICPA’s national board of director for Bicol, and Atty. Eranio L. Punsalan, national committee chairperson on ethics oriented and updated the participants about the plans, programs and   activities of PICPA not only for the CPAs but also for Accountancy students.

Some of the major plans that Atty. Punsalan tackled were the development of the E-Accountancy Library and the so-called “Accountancy Seminar Conference Area”. Also, PICPA is eyeing to build an Accountancy Museum where artifacts’ of the Accountancy profession are to be showcased. This would include old monetary units, old model chart of accountants, first bills of lading, etc.

During Technical Session 2 of the said convention, Atty. Punsalan updated the participants about the programs and projects of the Board of Accountancy (BOA) which included issues and concerns regarding the CPA Licensure Examination. In connection with this, BOA will conduct regular reviews and enhance the administration of the mentioned licensure exam. He stressed that they will soon regulate accounting schools in coordination with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), which offers specialized courses for the various fields of Accountancy.

Standards of Professional Ethics were discussed during Technical Session 3 by Atty. Tan-Torres. A new title for accountants was also proposed; instead of the usual title “CPA”, BOA is now proposing to use the abbreviation “ACCNTNT.
