SorSU-NSTP conducts mangrove planting activity for environmental protection and preservation

Sorsogon State University Sorsogon City Campus National Service  Training Program (NSTP) students actively took part in the mangrove-propagules planting last December 2, 2023 at Barangay Capuy, Sorsogon City, Sorsogon.

The SorSU NSTP in collaboration with City Environment & Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Sorsogon worked hand in hand toward achieving the goal of the “One Million Trees Challenge” in the province of Sorsogon. The “One Million Trees Challenge” is the province’s action under its “Kalikasan” program to help fight global climate change.

It was participated by CENRO personnel, KAAGAPAY NSTP volunteers, selected Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) students, and other Barangay officials of the Local Government Unit of Capuy.

Before the mangrove-planting proper, the participating students first had an orientation about mangrove planting, its techniques and significance. More than 1,000 mangrove-propagules were planted during the conduct of the activity.

According to https://ph.oceana.org/, the largest international advocacy organization focused solely on ocean conservation, mangrove forests are essential for many coastal communities because they offer food sources, livelihood opportunities, and defense against coastal hazards.

“Our micro effort can have a macro effect towards environmental protection and preservation. Let us be united in saving our Planet Earth.”

SorSU extends its warmest gratitude to CENRO Sorsogon and LGU of Brgy. Capuy.
