SorSU – Graduate School organizes successful 3rd Research Colloquium virtually

With a total of 531 registered participants, Sorsogon State University – Graduate School (SorSU-GS), successfully spearheaded its 3rd Research Colloquium virtually, bearing the theme, “Engage, Emerge, Empower: Navigating the Challenges and Building Educational Resilience,” which ran from May 18-19, 2024 via Zoom Meeting and as well as via live streaming through its official Facebook page.
SUC President III, Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus, in her welcome remarks, emphasized that the student researchers will not only be testing the theories that they have learned and applied in their research but also displaying to the panel their professional confidence and academic competence.

SorSU President De Jesus underscored, “Remember that as the Pamantasang May Puso, we exist to educate the youth, generate and apply new knowledge and technological innovations that will contribute to the development of Sorsogon and the entire nation. To realize all these, I encourage everyone to be onboard and join us in sustaining and furthering improving the capabilities and services of the graduate school and the entire university.”

Subsequently, Dr. Sherill A. Gilbas (Professor VI & Program Chair, PhD Language Education) presented the graduate student-participants from various academic programs. Notably, Dr. Georgia Hart-Fredeluces, the first International Visiting Professor of SorSU-GS from Idaho State University, USA and US Fulbright Scholar, delivered the keynote speech, entitled, “Thriving through adversity: A comparison of educational and social-ecological resilience,” which encompassed discussions on educational resilience, social-ecological resilience, as well as supporting educational resilience & social-ecological resilience.

The two-day event of the Graduate School highlighted paper presentations composed of four main research tracks, to wit: (1) Qualitative; (2) Quantitative; (3) Developmental; and (4) Mixed Method/Action Research Category. Dr. Susan F. Astillero (GS Research & IRO Coordinator Convener) presented the distinguished panel of evaluators in respective research categories, namely: Dr. Jerry G. Firmanes, Dr. Michael M. Uy, & Dr. Michael L. Estremera for Quantitative Research; SUC President III, Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus, Engr. Sandro B. Noguera, & Engr. Christopher O. Pacardo for Developmental Research; Dr. Georgia Hart-Fredeluces, Dr. James Christian H. Nabong, & Dr. Michelle H. Guadamor for Mixed Method/Action Research; Dr. Jean Carrol C. Antonio, Dr. Evelyn E. Mella, & Dr. Joshua D. Oyon-oyon for Qualitative Research.
Further, Dr. Gerry S. Digo (Program Chair, EdD-ELM/MED/MAM-AS) presented the guidelines for the paper presentation, with emphasis on strict adherence to 15-minute length presentation and 10-minute Q&A portion.

Meanwhile, Day 2 of the event featured a plenary lecture by Dr. Georgia Hart-Fredeluces as well as the continuation of paper presentations in the Mixed Method/Action Research Category as well as in the Qualitative Research Category. The closing message of the colloquium was delivered by Dr. Ritzelda A. Deri (Program Chair, MAED/PhD MathEd and SDS Coordinator).
