Centered on the theme, “Exemplifying Professionalism and Versatility in an Era of Connectivity: A Challenge to the Graduates,” Sorsogon State University (SorSU) is currently celebrating its three-day 31st Commencement Exercises, with the College of Teacher Education and Midwifery (CoTEdM) kicking off the graduation rites, featuring a total of 499 Class of 2024 graduates and recognizing 70 Latin honorees, held today, June 26, 2024, at the Sorsogon Convention Center, Sorsogon City.
An academic processional of the graduating students alongside their respective parents, teaching and non-teaching personnel, University officials, and esteemed guests officially commenced the graduation ceremonies.
Dr. Telesforo D. Escoto (Campus Director, Sorsogon City Campus) led the presentation and certification of the 499 candidates for graduation (Diploma in Midwifery – 176; BS in Midwifery – 8; BEED – 92; BTVTED FSM – 17; BTVTED-Electrical – 13; BTVTED-Automotive – 9; BPED – 38; BSNED – 38; BCAED – 28; BSED-Sciences – 17; BSED-Mathematics – 20; BSED-Filipino – 20; & BSED-English – 23). In response, SUC President III, Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus, by the virtue vested upon her as the University President by the SorSU – Board of Regents (BOR) and upon the certification from the Campus Director that they have completed the requirements of their respective curricula, officially confirmed the graduates of the Class of 2024.
This year’s distinguished guest speaker, Dr. Bert J. Tuga, the President of the Philippine Normal University (PNU) — renowned National Center for Teacher Education, underscored in his commencement address, that both teachers and midwives portray fundamental functions in the development and growth of the communities and society at large, citing the crucial roles they have as the Philippines endeavors to achieve the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030 Agenda, with teachers for SDG 4: Quality Education and Related Goals and midwives for SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being.
Particularly, PNU President Tuga emphasized to the education graduates that in this era of connectivity, the responsibilities of educators and teachers extend into the digital realm.
“In a time of rampant disinformation, teachers are crucial defenders of truth and democracy. Your role as digital mentors is vital, promoting critical thinking and skepticism of unverified information. By encouraging your students to question, to seek evidences, and value accuracy, you help safeguard our society’s future — marking your significant influence both online and offline.”
Dr. Tuga also commended the pivotal duties of midwives in the communities. He remarked, “Your role in the health sector cannot be understated. You ensure women’s physical wellness and mental readiness as they fulfill their motherly duties. You pave the way for more accessible and inclusive services for women in our communities.”
In his concluding message, the esteemed commencement speaker imparted to the graduates three essential principles encapsulated in the initials of the university: Service, Stewardship, and Unity.
Meanwhile, the awarding of medals to 70 Latin Honor students was facilitated by SUC President III, Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus, Dr. Jhonner D. Ricafort (Vice President for Academic Affairs, and the honorees’ respective parents, with 25 Magna Cum Laude and 45 Cum Laude awardees. Moreover, the awarding of diplomas to the 499 graduates was also facilitated by the SorSU President and assisted by the vice presidents, campus directors, university registrar, CoTEdM dean, and the guest speaker.
Further, Ms. Khiara Quenzelle D. Belleca (BSED-English), Magna Cum Laude, delivered the Words of Gratitude. Subsequently, the Pledge of Loyalty as well as the Induction of Graduates to the Alumni Association were led by Prof. Mark John G. Guysayko (SorSU SSC-FA Vice President), in lieu of Prof. Perry F. Carpio (President, Faculty Association) and VPAA Ricafort (President, Alumni Association), respectively.
SorSU’s 31st Commencement Exercises (Day 1 – morning) successfully culminated with the singing of the SorSU Hymn by the Class of 2024 graduates.
