Hosted by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the Malaysian Ministry of Education, Sorsogon State University (SorSU) SUC President III, Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus, embarked on an academic undertaking to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and took part at the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) for the 2030 Regional Meeting on Transforming the Futures of Education, held at Sunway University, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from July 2-4, 2024.

Centered on the theme, “Mainstreaming Education for Sustainable Development in Learning Systems,” the three-day meeting highlighted various informative sessions and events, comprising of both global and regional ESD insights, exemplary panel members, site visits, and working sessions, with the primary aim of integrating Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and principles across Asia-Pacific Region through holistic and transformative means (UNESCO, n.d.).


Noteworthy, the international event emphasized the significance for ESD to be mainstreamed not only in existing curricula or academic contexts but also into regional pedagogies and assessment instruments as well as communities such as youth programs and other collaborative partnerships with other local agencies and institutions.


Further, CHED Commissioner and SorSU BOR Chairperson, Dr. Ethel Agnes Pascua-Valenzuela, likewise joined the three-day international meeting as the esteemed moderator for Session One: Asia-Pacific Regional Progress on ESD for 2030.


In reference, according to UNESCO (n.d.), Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) equips learners with the knowledge, capabilities, values, and platforms to collectively take part in combatting global concerns, including climate change, loss of biodiversity, inequality, unsustainable resource consumption, etc.


SorSU proactively supports conferences, initiatives, and relevant undertakings that address educational challenges as well as other related global issues toward fostering a transformative and innovative academic landscape that particularly champions the goals and principles of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
