SorSU-Career and Placement Services/ILDO Unit, in collaboration with GAD, organizes “Ligtas Ang May Alam: ILDO Seminar on Safe Spaces and Sexual Harassment for OJT-Bound Students”

To promote informative and educational awareness concerning students’ safety and security during industry deployment, Sorsogon State University – Career and Job Placement Services/Industry Linkages and Development Office (ILDO), in collaboration with the Office of the Gender and Development, successfully spearheaded a seminar activity called “Ligtas Ang May Alam: ILDO Seminar on Safe Spaces and Sexual Harassment for OJT-Bound Students” on November 07, 2023, at the SorSU Audio-Visual Hall, Sorsogon City Campus.

The seminar activity commenced with welcome remarks from Prof. Lelanie L. Berjuega (Head, Career and Placement Services/ILDO Unit), emphasizing that the event is a significant step toward creating awareness, sharing knowledge, and fostering constructive discussions around critical topics.

“Let us remember that change begins with dialogue and education. Together, we can develop a deeper understanding of the issues at hand, explore innovative solutions, and commit ourselves to acting in the fight against sexual harassment and the promotion of a Safe Space Act.”

Featuring resource speakers Ms. Riche Justine P. Duran (College of Business and Management faculty member) and Ms. Glady Joy M. Mella (Campus Coordinator & OIC, GAD), the seminar activity focused on and addressed gender-based sexual harassment laws, particularly Republic Act 7877, also referred to as the “Anti-Sexual Harassment Act of 1995”, and Republic Act 11313, otherwise known as the “Safe Spaces Act” (Bawal Bastos Law).

The activity intended to equip students preparing for on-the-job training (OJT) with fundamental understanding and awareness relative to safe spaces and sexual harassment to protect their safety and well-being during industry placements. It also aimed to empower students to recognize and address issues along with sexual harassment while highlighting the critical importance of creating safe and respectful spaces in workplace settings.

Comprised of two sessions, the seminar was attended by fourth-year students of BS in Hospitality Management, BS in Tourism Management, BT in Garment Technology, BET-Automotive Technology, and BET-Civil Technology for morning session, while the afternoon activity was participated by fourth-year BET-Architectural Drafting, BET-Electrical Technology, BET-Electronics Technology, BET-Mechanical Technology, and BET-Welding & Fabrication students.
