A remarkable day unfolded at SM Sorsogon, marking the successful debut of a ready-to-drink pili milk product.
Under the leadership of Pedro F. Oliver, OIC/SDPTC-Superintendent, the Department of Agriculture RFO5-Sorsogon Dairy Production and Technology Center launched Pili Milk on February 21, 2024 at SM Sorsogon City.
In a groundbreaking stride towards innovative approach, Dr. Junel B. Soriano, Director of DA-Bureau of Agricultural Research proudly presented the pili milk product which marked a significant milestone for the Department of Agriculture. According to him, pili milk is a premium dairy alternative from pili nuts and is a very promising product.
The product was initially conceptualized in support to the vision of the Sorsogon Pili Development Board in collaboration with the Provincial Government of Sorsogon, Department of Agriculture RFO5 and other partner agencies on Pili Road Map Programs. It was developed from a Research Project funded by DA-Bureau of Agricultural Research under HVCDP Category.
Among the distinguished guests in the event were Hon. Ma. Ester E. Hamor, City Mayor of Sorsogon, Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus, SUC President III and SPPDB Chairperson/ and Edgar R. Madrid, Regional Technical Director (RTD) for Research and Regulations.
Speaking to an audience, Dr. Geraldine F. de Jesus, SorSU President and concurrent Chairman of the Sorsogon Provincial Pili Development Board said she envisioned Sorsogon as the Pili Capital of the Philippines. She likewise assured every one of her unwavering support in promoting Research and Development in the province. She specifically mentioned that SorSU will open a Food Innovation Center where pili products can also be showcased.
The Pili milk took center stage because it was awarded as Best Product under “Food Category” competition at the Central Luzon State University. This award-winning product was the result of the extensive research headed by Engr. Agnes D. Espinola. Together with Research Assistants Rose Formento, Juvy L. Estareja and Joan Luzande, they leveraged their expertise to produce a plant-based milk from pili nuts extract which will also charter the way for future endeavors.
The successful take-off of the product was made possible by the coordinated efforts of the stakeholders and cooperation with other partner agencies like Department of Trade and Industry, Food Development Center and the LGUs. (SorSU PIO)
