With the theme, “Navigating the Digital Landscape in Microbiology”, Sorsogon State University (SorSU) SUC President III, Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus, together with SorSU Science educators and SorSU BSED-Sciences students, is currently partaking in the 16th PSM Bicol Regional Convention and Scientific Meeting spearheaded by Philippine Society for Microbiology Bicol Chapter today, March 08, 2024, at the Iriga City Sports Complex, New Government Center, Sta. Cruz, Iriga City, Camarines Sur.
The convention formally began with the processional of the PSM Bicol Chapter Board Members, resource speakers, as well as guests, including SorSU President De Jesus. Mr. Junlee M. Vargas (President, PSM-Bicol Chapter) delivered the opening remarks, while Hon. Wilfredo Rex C. Oliva (Mayor, Iriga City) provided the welcome remarks of the regional event, followed by a message from Dr. Thaddeus M. Carvajal (President, Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc.).
Meanwhile, this year’s 16th Bicol Regional Convention and Scientific Meeting keynote speaker is Dir. Rommel S. Serrano (Regional Director, Department of Science and Technology – Regional Office V).
Further, the regional activity is composed various lectures, including Lecture 1: Current Challenges in Microbiology Education: AI, Online Tools, and Other Technologies by Dr. Howell T. Ho (Immediate Past President, PSM, Inc. & Vice President for Academic Affairs, Trinity University of Asia); Lecture 2: Machine Learning Methods in Understanding Vector-Borne Diseases: A Case Study in Dengue Disease Dynamics by Dr. Thaddeus M. Carvajal (President, Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc. & Associate Professor, Department of Biology – College of Science, De La Salle University – Manila); and Lecture 3: SMART Approaches in Microbiological Food Safety and Quality Monitoring by Ms. Kathleen V. Pahoyo, MSc, SMicro.
In addition, the event also comprised open forums after lectures as well as featured research presentations, poster exhibit, and product presentation, among others.
The SorSU Science faculty members present in the regional convention, along with BSED-Sciences students, are Prof. Edna Marie L. Mijares, Ms. Cyra Mae R. Soreda, Mr. Nestor L. Lasala, Jr., Ms. Mary Rose B. Lacdang, and Mr. Ian Anthony T. Hagacer. (SorSU PIO)
