To honor one of the key figures in the journey of Sorsogon State University, SorSU President Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus, University Key Officials, Faculty, and Personnel visited the wake of former Sorsogon State College (now SorSU) President, Dr. Augusto R. Nieves on October 24, 25, and 27, 2023 at the St. Peter Chapel, Diversion Road, Naga City.
SorSU President Dr. De Jesus and SorSU Bulan Campus paid respects on Tuesday, October 24, 2023. Meanwhile, SorSU employees from other campuses bid their farewells to Dr. Nieves on October 25 and 27, respectively. Moreover, Dr. Emilio B. Espinosa Sr. Memorial State College of Agriculture and Technology (DEBESMSCAT) President Dr. Arnel B. Millesca, and President Dr. Alex H. Navarroza of Bicol State College of Applied Science and Technology (BISCAST) were also present.
Dr. Augusto R. Nieves was the first President of Sorsogon State College (SSC) for two terms from 1995 to 2005. As the SSC’s first President, his administration worked to make SSC on the map of State Universities and Colleges not only in the Region but also in the country. He was responsible for the opening of academic programs, enhancement of curriculum, and strengthening instruction, research, extension, and production. Further, he also initiated the College’s international linkages in the late 90s to early 20s, establishing networks in Japan, South Korea, Australia, the United Kingdom, and other countries under the Southeast Asia Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) program.
The University also sends its immense appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Nieves for mentoring people and leading change from a trade school to the College it is now. His legacy is etched in every SorSUeno. Mula sa Pamantasang may Puso, maraming maraming salamat po, Dr. Nieves.
SorSU extends its sympathies and condolences to the family and loved ones of former President Dr. Nieves.
