(FEATURE) From Tears to Triumph: SorSU-Bulan Campus confers Posthumous Degree on Brave Chronic Kidney Disease-Fighter

It was a bittersweet moment for Sorsogon State University – Bulan Campus to honor a posthumous degree to a courageous graduate who lost his life to a fifth-stage chronic kidney disease just weeks before the anticipated graduation ceremony– a poignant reminder of his indomitable spirit and perseverance.

John Rey C. Alano, 22, a resident of Brgy. Poblacion, Magallanes, Sorsogon, completed his academic requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology degree, including his on-the-job training at the Local Government Unit of Magallanes, despite the countless setbacks and unbearable pain that he felt throughout his battle against his disease. He remained resilient, continuing to pursue studies while undergoing grueling medical treatments, even during the challenging set-up of online distance learning brought by the pandemic.

Tears mingled with applause as his uncle, Mr. Reynaldo Alano, marched on stage with his portrait to receive his diploma during the 30th Commencement Exercises of Sorsogon State University – Bulan Campus on June 7, 2023 at Bulan Gymnasium, Sta. Remedios, Bulan, Sorsogon. His uncle has been his guardian as he journeyed through his university life while battling against the disease.

The posthumous graduation of John Rey Alano not only highlights the inherent compassion and empathy within Sorsogon State University’s community but also underscores the university’s commitment to recognizing and honoring the accomplishments of its students, regardless of the circumstances. John Rey’s spirit will forever live on, serving as a reminder to current and future students that perseverance and determination can overcome even the greatest challenges. (SorSU – Bulan Campus)
