Landmark Gathering at Sorsogon State University: Federation for Agricultural Sustainability Established

Sorsogon State University’s Castilla Campus spearheaded an important gathering on May 3, 2024, aimed at enhancing agricultural collaboration and sustainability. The event brought together local farmers, fisherfolk, and agricultural stakeholders to establish a federation designed to improve Castilla’s agricultural practices and strengthen community bonds.

Prof. Andrew F. Detera, SorSU Castilla Campus Director, opened the event by warmly welcoming all participants and emphasizing the importance of community involvement. He highlighted the substantial impact of the university’s extension and research projects on local agricultural development and sustainability.


Dr. Rochele N. Aragon, Dean of the College of Agriculture, expressed her gratitude for the diverse turnout. She acknowledged the vital role of various organizations and representatives in enriching the region’s agricultural sector.


A highlight of the meeting was the words of encouragement and appreciation from local government officials and Department of Agriculture representatives. They praised the perseverance and critical contributions of Castilla’s farming and fishing communities.


The newly formed federation, named “Samahan ng Magsasaka at Mangingisda ng Castilla” (SaMaMaCa), aims to unify and support farmers and fisherfolk across the municipality. It seeks to promote sustainable agricultural practices and improve livelihood programs. The meeting also focused on establishing Technical Working Groups (TWGs) to optimize agricultural processes in key areas such as rice cultivation, high-value crops, and fisheries.


Ms. Ira M. Habla, Coordinator for Extension and Training Services, reported on the successes of recent initiatives, noting remarkable achievements in partnerships and training programs that exceeded expectations.


The assembly engaged in a democratic process to elect the federation officers. The elected officers are:

Secretary: Ms. Janette Benbing
Treasurer: Ms. Sharon Sibuyo
Auditor: Mr. Jaime Alipio

Marketing Committee: Mrs. Maria Victoria Barcelon
Climate Resilience: Mr. Joseph Veron Maravilla


The federation is headed by Ms. Virginia P. Oanzon, with support from SorSU Castilla Campus, signifying the importance of a solid foundation for effective governance and continued collaborative efforts.


Prof. Nestor D. Ebuenga, Jr., in lieu of Dr. Ana Cristina G. Fortes, Director of Extension and Training Services, concluded the event with heartfelt closing remarks. He expressed profound gratitude and optimism for the federation’s future impact on the community.
