In a bid to empower poultry farmers and agriculture students alike, Sorsogon State University (SorSU) Castilla Campus recently hosted an insightful webinar on poultry management. Held on September 21, 2024, the virtual event provided a wealth of knowledge on the successful breeding of both native and improved chicken breeds, drawing an audience of 291 participants eager to enhance their expertise.

The webinar kicked off with a virtual tour of SorSU-Castilla’s advanced agricultural facilities, where participants were introduced to the university’s dedicated poultry production areas. Dr. Rochele N. Aragon, Dean of the College of Agriculture, opened the event by underscoring the program’s importance in raising the quality and profitability of chicken production. She highlighted how these efforts align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically targeting the eradication of poverty and hunger.

The resource speaker, Professor Nestor Ebuenga, an esteemed authority in poultry production, took the virtual stage to deliver a comprehensive presentation. His talk delved into the nutritional benefits of chickens, the potential of native breeds, and the various business opportunities tied to chicken farming. Prof. Ebuenga emphasized that native chicken production offers a promising avenue for small-scale farmers, due to its relatively low investment needs and its potential to yield sustainable profits.

Prof. Ebuenga’s presentation covered a broad array of essential topics for poultry farmers, including survival rates, reproductive efficiency, feeding patterns, and the genetic traits that are key to successful native chicken farming. Prof. Ebuenga further outlined proven strategies for maximizing productivity, such as selecting high-quality breeding stock, implementing proper incubation techniques, and adopting free-range rearing methods. According to him, these practices not only enhance farm output but also contribute to the economic viability of smallholder poultry farms.

The webinar also included an open forum where participants actively engaged with Prof. Ebuenga, asking pertinent questions on specific aspects of chicken management. From optimal feed formulations to enhancing egg production, the discussion was lively and educational, with Prof. Ebuenga offering expert advice and practical solutions to common farming challenges.

The event proved to be a resounding success, offering a rare opportunity for poultry farmers, students, and agriculture enthusiasts to learn directly from experts in the field. By sharing cutting-edge practices and strategies, the SorSU Castilla Campus continues to contribute to the advancement of sustainable poultry production in the region, providing farmers with the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly competitive agricultural landscape.
