After a year of rigorous research efforts for Project DANAO: Nag-Aso Boiling Lake in Manito, Albay, project leader Dr. Ryan V. Dio, Vice President for Research, Extension, and Training of Sorsogon State University (SorSU), spearheaded the activity titled “Project DANAO Presentation and Validation of Project Deliverables with Local Sectoral Representatives” held on July 23, 2025, at Bermuda Resort, Manito, Albay.
Launched in 2024, Project DANAO—a collaborative undertaking between SorSU and the Department of Science and Technology – National Research Council of the Philippines (DOST-NRCP)—aims to study the freshwater ecosystem of Nag-Aso Lake, evaluate local socio-economic conditions, and assess resource use and management practices among stakeholders. The project has since then engaged with multiple partner agencies including DOST, Partido State University, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and the Municipal Government of Manito.
The event opened with introductions of the esteemed project team members and representatives from local sectors. Dr. Dio presented the comprehensive Year 1 Report, detailing key accomplishments of the project. Highlights included the profiling of Nag-Aso Lake, demographic and socio-economic analyses, identified challenges and risks, case narratives, lake valuation, and the proposed advocacy and action framework for sustainable lake management. Messages of support were also given by Municipal Mayor of Manito, Hon. Jerry D. Arizapa and community leaders.
Formally titled “Project DANAO: Demographic Characterization to Advance Nag-Aso Lake Conservation and Advocacies in Optimizing Benefits among Stakeholders,” the initiative is envisioned to generate evidence-based research outputs, livelihood opportunities, policy inputs, strengthened institutional partnerships, and the foundational framework for positioning Nag-Aso Lake as a conservation and eco-tourism destination.
The event concluded with the ceremonial signing of the Project Commitment Wall, symbolizing the continued support of local leaders and community stakeholders. Notable signatories include Mayor Jerry D. Arizapa, alongside Mr. Erwin A. Daz (Sangguniang Bayan Member), Ms. Jasmine Claire D. Briones (LGU-MENRO), Mr. Alwin Nol (Barangay Captain, Hulogan), Mr. Larry Dawal (Barangay Captain, Balabagon), and Ms. Brenda Padilla (Staff of Hon. Erwin A. Daz).
