In a remarkable display of talent and dedication, the Sorsogon State University (SorSU) Dance Theater and Cultural Group (DTCG) emerged as the champions in the Adult Category at the First Baguio National Dance-Multicultural Competition, held on April 24, 2025, at the Athletic Bowl in Baguio City. This victory marks a momentous achievement for both the SorSU community and the entire DTCG family.
The group captivated the judges and audience alike with their performance of “Karatong”, a vibrant folk dance traditionally performed in Mindanao and Palawan. Karatong is celebrated for its role in harvest festivals, where it serves both to express gratitude for a bountiful yield and to drive away evil spirits through rhythmic movements and the sound of bamboo percussion instruments. SorSU DTCG’s rendition of the dance was a powerful fusion of cultural storytelling and artistic discipline. Their commitment to honoring and preserving Filipino cultural traditions through dance was clearly evident in every movement.
The following SorSU DTCG dancers participated in the competition:
- Jessica May A. Wager – BPED 2A
- Kristine Joy L. Manago – BPED 3A
- Carl Emmanuel T. Jayona – BCAED IA
- Karl Augustine H. Dizon – BSTM 3A
- Jazmin I. Bonos – BCAED IA

The SorSU DTCG, along with the Pamantasang may Puso, extends its deepest gratitude to SorSU President Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus for her unwavering support and to Prof. Oliver F. Garbin (SorSU DTCG Coach/Trainer) for his commitment and invaluable mentorship. His passion for research in folklore and dances, as reflected in the DTCG’s winning performances, played a pivotal role in their success. The group also extends its sincere appreciation to Ms. Kristel Kimberly G. Dellomas (SorSU DTCG Adviser) for her continuous encouragement and guidance throughout their journey.
Once again, congratulations to the SorSU Dance Theater and Cultural Group for bringing home the championship trophy and making the SorSU family proud. This victory marks not only a milestone for the dancers but also a celebration of their artistic journey and commitment to the vibrant cultural heritage of the Philippines. (SorSU PIO)
