Aligned with SorSU’s initiatives towards sustainable community development and active internationalization, Dr. Diana V. Sales, Dean of the College of Business & Management Education (CBME), attended the Marine Plastics/ Litter Beach Monitoring Training in Bali, Indonesia on September 12 – 14, 2023, upon the invitation of Dr. Won-Tae Shin of the Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA), the organizer of the event.
This event was undertaken as a citizen-science empowerment activity for tracking long-term plastics/litter inflow to the coastal areas. It is one of the activities under the RO Korea-funded and PEMSEA-managed 6-year ODA project on “Reducing Marine Plastics in the East Asian Seas Region.
The monitoring training was also organized in tandem with the 4th International Conference on Integrated Coastal Management & Marine Biotechnology (ICMMBT), initiated by the CCMRS-IPB University of Indonesia. The conference exposed the participants to the broader sustainable coastal and marine management issues, including on marine plastics pollution.
Dr. Sales was primarily trained to become familiar with marine plastics and litter beach monitoring for the Municipality of Bulan. She was accompanied by Mr. Mikhail Paolo Rosil of the Municipal Environment & Natural Resources Office (MENRO) of LGU-Bulan. They are expected to collaborate on this monitoring project, including on research and extension initiatives. The monitoring activity will be conducted on a quarterly basis employing a methodology developed by RO Korean Government.
As she returns to SorSU-Bulan Campus, Dr. Sales will serve as focal person for this project and is expected to lead and form the research and extension teams of faculty members who will become SorSU-Bulan’s force in realizing this international commitment. (SorSU Bulan Campus)
