SorSU Castilla Campus Hosts International Visiting Professor from VIVES UAS (Belgium) and CBSUA Delegation

Fostering Global Partnerships through Cultural and Academic Exchange

June 11, 2025 | In a significant display of international collaboration and academic solidarity, Sorsogon State University – Castilla Campus (SorSU) warmly welcomed representatives from the Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) and Prof. Jonathan Vanhaelst, an esteemed International Visiting Professor from VIVES University of Applied Sciences, Belgium, during a cultural and academic exchange titled “Connect & Exchange: A Brief Cultural and Academic Encounter.”

Held at the Office of the Campus Director, the event marked a meaningful milestone in building and strengthening cross-border partnerships focused on education, agricultural innovation, and sustainable development.

Prof. Andrew F. Detera, Castilla Campus Director, officially opened the program, highlighting the importance of global engagement in education. “This gathering is a testament to SorSU’s commitment to fostering international academic partnerships that enrich instruction, research, and cultural awareness,” he shared, underscoring the role of international linkages in building a globally competent academic community.

Representing CBSUA, Dr. Vladimir R. Foronda, Director of the Extension Services Division, expressed gratitude and enthusiasm for the collaboration. “CBSUA, in partnership with VIVES University of Applied Sciences, is eager to work hand-in-hand with SorSU in pushing for innovations in agricultural research and environmental advocacy,” he remarked.

Dr. Foronda was accompanied by a diverse team of CBSUA officials from their four campuses, composed of unit heads, program chairs, technical staff, and administrative personnel specializing in technology dissemination, training and continuing education, monitoring and evaluation, project development, and ICT support.

A highlight of the program was the presentation by Prof. Jonathan Vanhaelst, who currently serves as a Visiting Academic Professor at CBSUA. He shared key pedagogical innovations and environmentally driven agricultural programs of VIVES UAS in Belgium, sparking discussions on how such frameworks could be adapted in the Philippine context. His discourse underlined the power of sustainable academic exchange and the shared responsibility in addressing global agricultural and ecological challenges.

Institutional overviews from both CBSUA and SorSU provided attendees with a deeper understanding of each university’s mission and initiatives. This was followed by a ceremonial awarding of certificates and tokens, recognizing the delegates and guests for their participation and commitment.

To further enrich the academic and cultural exchange, the participants were given a guided campus tour, showcasing academic areas, laboratories, and facilities. This tour offered the delegation an in-depth view of the university’s academic environment and its commitment to community-responsive programs.

To symbolize the growth and rootedness of the emerging partnership, pili and bamboo tree planting ceremony was conducted after the tour. The act of planting the tree served as a powerful emblem of enduring collaboration, environmental stewardship, and the cultural heritage of the Bicol region.

The event brought together key SorSU Castilla Campus officials, including representatives from administration, academic programs, international relations, planning management, business affairs, and the management information system. It concluded with a shared commitment to pursue joint research collaborations, student and faculty exchanges, and internationalization initiatives aligned with sustainable development goals.

This exchange reflects SorSU’s ongoing pursuit of a globally connected academic environment rooted in innovation, cooperation, and mutual respect.
