SorSU celebrates Arts, Freedom, and Identity in a Festival

Showcasing a vibrant celebration of artistic expression and inclusivity, the Sorsogon State University-Culture and Arts Unit, in collaboration with the Gender and Development (GAD) Unit, proudly presented “LAYA: A Festival of Arts, Freedom, and Identity” on March 11, 2025, at the SorSU covered court, Sorsogon City Campus.

The event began with an invocation and the Philippine National Anthem sung by Himig SorSUenos. This was followed by the SorSU Hymn performed by Instrumentos De Cordo and the opening salvo delivered by Sorsogon National High School.

Dr. Alfonzo L. Garcia Jr. (Dean, College of Teacher Education) in his opening remarks, welcomed everyone and emphasized the importance of culture and the arts in shaping the university’s identity. This was followed by a message from Prof. Shayne Kate A. Gozo (University Culture Coordinator) and a special performance by the PDC dancers.

The impressive performances from the Theater Arts Club, Himig SorSUenos, Instrumentos De Cordo, Dance Theater and Cultural Group, Ms. Kate Baluyot, and the Marching Band and Majorettes, highlighted the immense talent within the university community.

In addition to the performances, the event also recognized the contributions of both teaching and non-teaching personnel, and the guest performers. The festival concluded with closing remarks from Mr. Roy O. Jarlego (City Campus Coordinator, Culture and Arts Unit).
