SorSU Emergency First Responders undergo 3-day training workshop on emergency preparedness

In recognition of the vital need for effective emergency response, the Sorsogon State University- Disaster Risk Reduction and Management/Climate Change (SorSU-DRRM/CC) Office led by Prof. Saturnino C. Carranza (Director, SorSU DRRM/CC Office), in collaboration with the Sorsogon City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office organized a comprehensive Emergency First Responders’ Training from October 1-3, 2024, held at the Dormitel and SorSU Social Hall.

The training commenced with an overview of the course, highlighting key topics such as the Incident Command System (ICS) and its role in managing emergencies. Emphasis was placed on how responders can work collaboratively with the local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) to ensure a coordinated response and preparation for the National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED).

The program included lectures on Basic First Aid and Life Support, alongside sessions focused on preparing for emergency simulation exercises and setting up command posts. Hands-on workshops provided practical training in techniques such as bandaging, splinting, spine board management, CPR, and safe victim handling. This culminated in a realistic simulation exercise where participants applied their newly acquired skills.

The closing program recognized the efforts of participants, with awards given to the best responder team and certificates of commendation presented to all attendees. An investiture ceremony followed, during which responders received their official shirts, symbolizing their role as trained first responders.

The training concluded with closing remarks from Mr. Gerald E. Fulay, JD (Vice President for Administration and Finance), who emphasized the importance of readiness and teamwork in facing emergencies. (SorSU PIO)
