On October 14, 2025, Sorsogon State University (SorSU) Magallanes Campus reaffirmed its commitment to public health by entering into a formal partnership with four key institutions to intensify the fight against tuberculosis (TB) through its initiative, “Lung-term Action: Uplifting Magallanes towards TB-Free Communities” in Magallanes, Sorsogon.

During the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing ceremony held at Magallanes Campus Auditorium, Sorsogon State University officially partnered with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Magallanes, the Sorsogon Provincial Health Office, the Department of Health-Center for Health Development Bicol, and Bicol University.

The collaboration aims to implement a community-based initiative centered on the prevention, control, and eventual elimination of tuberculosis. This joint effort addresses the ongoing challenge of TB in the municipality through a multi-pronged strategy that includes improving early detection and diagnosis, empowering barangay health workers, and increasing community awareness to reduce stigma.
SUC President III, Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus, conveyed her deep appreciation for the formalization of the partnership between the university and its four partner institutions.

In her message, she stated that health has long been recognized as one of an individual’s most vital assets. Without it, one is unable to study, work, or effectively perform daily functions. While tuberculosis is generally considered to be under control through modern medical practices, new cases emerge, particularly in marginalized communities. To resolve such issues, information dissemination is key to correcting misconceptions among the public. And in such activities, higher education institutions can play a pivotal role by collaborating with the DOH, LGUs, provincial and municipal health offices to extend support and services to those afflicted by tuberculosis.

The signing ceremony was attended by Hon. Maria Elena Ramona Ragrario (Municipal Mayor, Magallanes), representatives from the University of the Philippines-Manila, Sorsogon State University, Bicol University, LGU Magallanes, DOH Bicol Center for Health Development, Sorsogon Provincial Health Office, Sorsogon Provincial DOH Office, Municipal Health Office and the Rural Health Unit of Magallanes.
Through this MOA, SorSU and its partners are not only addressing an urgent health issue but also promoting a culture of shared responsibility, awareness, and resilience in the fight against tuberculosis. (SorSU PIO)
