SorSU-Graduate School holds 31st Commencement Exercises, confirms 79 GS graduates — confers 10 doctorate degrees, 69 master’s degrees

Celebrating a number of 79 graduates from various postgraduate programs of the institution, Sorsogon State University – Graduate School (SorSU-GS) successfully celebrated its 31st Commencement Exercises at the SorSU Audio-Visual Hall, Sorsogon City Campus, today June 28, 2024.

Preceded by the academic processional, one of the highlights of the ceremonies was the imposition of hoods of the candidates by their respective parents/guardians/spouses. Meanwhile, SUC President III, Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus, by the virtue vested upon her by the BOR and upon the presentation and certification of the candidates for graduation by Dr. Susan S. Janer (Dean, SorSU-GS), formally conferred 79 degrees to the graduates.


Relatively, 10 earned doctorate degrees — comprising seven Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership and Management (EdD-ELM) and three Doctor of Philosophy in Filipino (PhD Filipino) graduates.


On the other hand, 69 completed their master’s degrees — particularly six in Master of Arts in Education major in Public Administration (MAM-PA),14 in Master of Arts in Education major in Administration and Supervision (MAM-AS), 11 in Master of Arts in Education major in Filipino (MAED-Filipino), three in MAED-Mathematics, ten in MAED-English, seven in MAED-Science Education, eight in Master of Arts in Teaching major in Technology and Home Economics (MAT-THE), three in MAT major in Technology Education with Specialization in Electrical Technology, two in MAT major in Technology Education with Specialization in Food Service Management, and five in Master in Education major in Educational Management (MED-EM).


This year’s distinguished Guest of Honor, Dr. Nenneth Esplana-Alama (Director IV, Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Service, Department of Education) emphasized in her commencement address, some of the most significant lessons she has learned that shaped the person she is today.


The first lesson Dr. Esplana-Alama shared is believing in oneself. The commencement speaker highlighted, “Do self-talk. Tell yourself these. —
‘I believe in myself. I believe in my capabilities. I believe in my potential.’ — That is the power of positive projection. Do not expect someone else to believe in you if you will not believe in yourself.”

Moreover, she also underscored the valuable lessons of finding inspiration and being persistent, setting expectations while establishing a clear path on how to move forward, as well as the lesson of paying it forward. She further encouraged the graduates to always practice the golden rule and pass on the act of compassion. She remarked, “We rise by uplifting others.”


The awarding of diplomas was headed by the esteemed commencement speaker, Dr. Jhonner D. Ricafort (Vice President for Academic Affairs), Dr. Ryan V. Dio (Vice President for Research, Extension and Training), GS Dean Janer, Campus Directors: Dr. Telesforo D. Escoto (Sorsogon City Campus) & Prof. Lynn C. Mendoza (Magallanes Campus), Dr. Maria Lourdes G. Barrozo (University Registrar), Atty. Mary Joy C. Bongapat (Acting Board Secretary V/Attorney IV), together with Dr. Perry F. Carpio (President, Faculty Association) and Mr. Erwin Formento (Student Regent).


Meanwhile, Dr. Perry F. Carpio (President, Faculty Association) led the Pledge of Loyalty, while VPAA Ricafort (President, Alumni Association) headed the Induction of Graduates to the Alumni Association. The GS graduation rites concluded with the singing of the SorSU Hymn of Class of 2024 graduates.
