Sorsogon State University Magallanes Campus (SorSU-MC) launched its seminar on Project HATE- Headway towards Awareness of Trends and Research Experiences in Marine Plastic Pollution last May 3, 2024 at the SorSU MC Auditorium. The seminar was attended by 120 students and faculty members of Magallanes National High School headed by Ms. Anabelle M. Nace (Asst. Principal II) together with respective class advisers. Also present were the SorSU personnel and students.
The seminar was focused on RA 9003 Solid Wastes Management Implementation with Mrs. Eden Ariate, Project Development Officer II, MENRO LGU Magallanes who thoroughly explained the salient features of the law, the role of LGU, its programs and status of Magallanes as to the implementation of solid wastes and management. This was followed by the Ms. Krismaryflor Testa-Tena, Project Manager of the World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines (WWF) who remarkably expounded on the advocacy and programs of WWF in its initiatives in Promoting Plastic Pollution Reduction and Wastes Management towards a plastic pollution-free coastal towns. Prof. Elden G. Orgela, Program Chair, Fisheries likewise exudes expertise in discussing the impact of plastic pollution to costal ecosystem mainly envisioning to the students the looming harmful effects to environment and biodiversity as it threatens ocean health- marine species, food safety and quality, human health, coastal tourism and contribute to climate change.
The auditorium roared with laughter and energy from the participants during the pre-test and post-test, and the wild guessing games. The Project HATE is an extension program headed by Prof. Mark Ariel D. Malto, Project Leader, Marine Pollution Expert, Mr. Abel Arevalo Jr. Co-project leader/ Fisheries Science Expert. Also, the Fisheries Science experts Mr. Elden G. Orgela, Mr. Michael Galapon, Ms. Cyrin Mae G. Burton. From Education and Literacy Group: Ms. Jinky D. Bailon, Mr. Franklin P.
