SorSU welcomes its first visiting foreign graduate student, French National Ms. Blanche Fisseu

In another significant milestone toward its steadfast pursuit and commitment to becoming a research University on a global standing, Sorsogon State University (SorSU), under the leadership of SUC President III, Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus and through the proactive involvement of SorSU – International Relations Office (IRO), SorSU – Admission Services Unit, and SorSU – Graduate School (SorSU-GS), welcomed its first visiting foreign graduate student named Ms. Blanche Fisseu, from the Universite Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne (Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne University), Paris, France.

Alongside Dr. Vivien L. Chua (Director, SorSU-IRO) and Dr. Sherill A. Gilbas (Head, Admission Services Unit), Ms. Fisseu held a courtesy visit to SorSU President De Jesus, who graciously received the visiting foreign graduate student and assured her of the University’s unreserved hospitality and full assistance during her stay.

Ms. Fisseu, a 21-year-old French National, is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Geography, with a master’s thesis exploring the sustainability of seaweed farming in the Province of Sorsogon. Ms. Fisseu’s study seeks to investigate the extent to which this type of aquaculture can be considered a sustainable way to diversify the activities of fishermen in the province, particularly on typhoon risks.

Relatively, to provide context regarding SorSU as her research location, Ms. Fisseu stated that following her perusal of published works of Dr. Edo Andriesse (Professor, Seoul National University – College of Geography), she contacted him, and they exchanged communications. In their dialogue, the latter recommended to Ms. Fisseu Dr. Richard V. Dumilag — a phycologist, seasoned researcher, and SorSU – Graduate School professor — whose expertise and studies align with Ms. Fisseu’s area of research interest.

During her three-month stay (from January – April 2024) in the University/Province, Ms. Fisseu will engage in collaborative research work and related activities with Dr. Dumilag and other SorSU Professors. With the continuous pursuit of raising its bar for academic excellence, the University —through academic partnerships, research collaborations, and other scholarly opportunities, among others — is steadfast in its efforts toward becoming a conducive and globally competitive academic/research institution both to local and international students.
