In proactive efforts and support to champion the United Nationsā€™ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) No. 13 ā€“ Climate Action & No. 15 ā€“ Life on Land, and as a major output for their Environmental Science course, 85 SorSUeƱo students from the Bachelor of Technical Vocational Teacher Education (BTVTED) and the Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship programs, led by their Project Adviser, Dr. Jhonner D. Ricafort (Vice President for Academic Affairs/Environmental Science Professor), in coordination with the Barangay Council of Bibincahan, successfully embarked on a meaningful tree planting initiative in Sitio San Lorenzo, Brgy. Bibincahan, Sorsogon City, Sorsogon on December 14, 2024 ā€” planting a total of 100 tree saplings, aimed at contributing to collective efforts to mitigate the impact of climate change and secure a greener future for all.


Generously provided by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources ā€“ Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-PENRO) Sorsogon, BS Entrep 3F and BTVTED students planted a variety of tree saplings, consisting of narra, santol, gumihan, and lipote (baligang).


Assisted by Hon. Edgar Dioneda (Brgy. Councilor) and the SorSU-ROTC Unit, headed by 2LT Vincent H. Haveria (RES) PA & SSG Romeo G Estrella Jr (INF) PA (Chief Clerk, SorSU-ROTC Bulan Campus), the student-proponents hiked approximately 2.5 km to reach the designated planting site, signifying their enthusiasm and commitment for the project. VPAA Dr. Ricafort gave a brief orientation before the actual tree planting session, demonstrating the proper planting techniques to enhance the survivability and successful growth of the saplings.
Prior to the event, the lead proponents, alongside VPAA Dr. Ricafort, also conducted an area survey and cleanup in preparation for the activity. In addition to the planting event, the project initiators have committed to conducting post-project activities, including regular follow-up visits to monitor the progress of the planted saplings and ensure the continuity of the project. Notably, the local residents are likewise equally involved in this initiative, assisting in nurturing the young plants.


The proponents extend their deepest appreciation to the Barangay Council of Bibincahan, DENR-PENRO Sorsogon, SorSU-ROTC Unit, key officials, local residents, and other individuals involved for their collaborative participation and support in the tree planting endeavor, underscoring the crucial role of community involvement in environmental conservation efforts.


SorSU remains steadfast committed to supporting meaningful undertakings aligned with the SDGs, including environmental protection and sustainable action. Through these collective efforts, the academe continues to cultivate a culture of environmental guardianship among its students, faculty, stakeholders, and the broader community ā€” recognizing the paramount importance of planting and saving trees for a greener, more sustainable future for all.
