In an initiative aimed at empowering SorSU athletes, the Office of Student Development and Services-Guidance and Counselling Services Unit conducted a night of learning and growth with a theme, “Strength Beyond the Game: Building Mental and Emotional Resiliency” on February 12, 2024 at the SorSU covered court. The event focused on providing techniques for developing inner strength and emotional resilience.
The session opened with an inspiring message from Prof. Maria Crisanta M. Jarque, Director of the Office of Student Development and Services (OSDS), who emphasized that competition goes beyond winning medals or trophies. “Ang kompetisyon ay hindi lamang laban para sa medalya o tropeo. Ito’y pagkakataon para masubok ang inyong lakas ng loob, karakter, at pagkakaisa bilang isang koponan. Sa bawat panalo, matutunan ninyong magpasalamat at maging mapagpakumbaba. Sa bawat pagkatalo, mahuhubog ang inyong tibay ng damdamin at kakayahang bumangon muli,” she passionately shared, highlighting the importance of character, resilience, and unity in sports.
Ms. Mary Ann J. Jintalan, RGC and Head of the Guidance and Counselling Services assured the athletes that the University would always support them physically, spiritually, and mentally. She emphasized the importance of focusing on factors within their control, avoiding comparisons with others, and trusting the training process. Athletes were also encouraged to acknowledge and validate negative emotions, reinforcing the belief in their capacity to bounce back and recover. To equip the participants with practical skills, the session included exercises such as positive self-talk, visualization techniques and relaxation exercises, including Qi-cong, to cope with pressures.
The event concluded with Prof. Kevin Richard Espedido, Head of Sports and Culture expressing heartfelt gratitude to the athletes for their dedication and perseverance. With spirits high, the court resonated with unity as everyone chanted, “S-O-R-S-U!” – a powerful reminder of their collective strength and school pride. (OSDS)
