16 Sorsogueno student-grantees, with 14 SorSUeƱos, receive CHED SMART grant

A total of 16 Sorsogueno student-grantees across various higher education institutions (HEIs) in Sorsogon Province, including 14 SorSUeƱo student-grantees (two from Sorsogon City Campus & 12 from Magallanes Campus), received a check worth P25,000.00 of educational assistance through the Student Monetary Assistance Recovery and Transition (SMART) Grant Program, headed and initiated by Hon. Marie Bernadette ā€œCong. Detteā€ G. Escudero (1st District Representative, Sorsogon Province), in coordination with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), held on January 16, 2024, at the SorSU E-library, Sorsogon City Campus.

In her message, Hon. Marie Bernadette ā€œCong. Detteā€ G. Escudero (1st District Representative, Sorsogon Province) emphasized that the grant is a significant help to students, noting that even with the free higher education in State Universities and Colleges (SUCs), there are still other college expenses to consider. She urged the grantees, ā€œGamitin ninyo lang sa tama [ang educational assistance].ā€

Afterward, the ceremonial awarding of the grant as well as the distribution of the SMART Grant to 16 student-grantees followed. They were accompanied by their respective parents. SUC President III, Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus, also graced the grant distribution program.

The SMART Grant program, pursuant to CHED Memorandum No. 08, s. 2023, is intended to provide a one-time fixed grant of twenty-five thousand pesos (P25,000.00) to qualified students enrolled in any undergraduate program for Academic Year 2023-2024 only, which is among the strategies of the National Employment Recovery Strategy toward the increased success of students to graduate through scholarships, despite the repercussions of the pandemic.
