The Sorsogon State University through its Faculty Members from the Technology Department conducted a series of Seminar workshops for members of Buhatan Nipa Food Production Association in Barangay Buhatan East District as part of its Livelihood Initiatives on Food and Technology (L.I.F.T.) Program.
As SSU heeds to the needs of the community through the expertise of its faculty researchers and staff, this collaboration will mark another milestone for both the university and the community. The Livelihood Initiatives on Food and Technology (L.I.F.T.) Program is a collaborative effort of the Sorsogon State University through its top faculty Researchers, Barangay Buhatan LGU, Nipa Food Production Association, City Government of Sorsogon, and other line agencies.
Barangay Buhatan LGU aims to develop livelihood opportunities for its fisherfolks and help the Nipa Food Production Association improve and enhance their product’s market value through a series of trainings in Good Manufacturing Practices, Food Safety, Product Packaging, Shelf life, Production Flow, Process, Product Costing and Nipa Vinegar Processing. Moreover, through this program, the SSU together with other line agencies will also assist on the actual production, product certification and marketing.
The First 2-DAY Seminar workshop conducted on June 3-4, 2021 at Buhatan Multi-Purpose Hall discussed topics on Food Hygiene, Hand washing, Food Hazards, Cross Contamination, Personal Hygiene, Packaging and Shelf Life of Products. This aims to guide the food processors with the understanding of the GMP minimum requirements in food processing activities to guarantee a quality and safe food products for the consuming public. Another Seminar workshop on June 25 focused on the Nipa Vinegar Processing with topics focused on product costing, harvesting and sap collection, production, packaging and labeling.
On June 4, 2021 by Mr. Edwin Divina, the Barangay Chairman of Buhatan expressed his gratitude to all the supporters and collaborators of the program through his social media account. He posted “WE’LL CREATE PURE ORGANIC VINEGAR from NIPA to help our FISHER FOLKS…” He further reiterated on another post on June 11, 2021 that the NIPA FOOD PRODUCTION ASSOCIATION will soon be launching its product which he proudly says as “Tatak BUHATAN, Tatak SORSOGON, 100% NATURAL, NO PRESERVATIVES. NIPA VINEGAR.”
