As the university concludes its celebration of Women’s Month, the final day, March 31, marked the culmination of a series of activities aimed at promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment. In line with this, the university spearheaded two significant initiatives: the distribution of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials on the Magna Carta of Women and the lighting of purple lights in university buildings and landmarks.
The IEC materials on the Magna Carta of Women were disseminated university-wide to ensure that students, faculty, and staff were well-informed about the rights, privileges, and protections granted to women under Republic Act No. 9710. This effort was carried out by the Office of the Gender and Development (GAD) and Public Information Office, along with the GAD Coordinators from various campuses namely: Glady Joy Mella (GAD Coordinator, Sorsogon City Campus), Abel Arevalo (GAD Coordinator, Magallanes Campus), Krishia Lachica (GAD Coordinator, Bulan Campus), Albert Acuna (GAD Coordinator, Castilla Campus), and Angelo Domanico (GAD Coordinator, Graduate School). These materials served as an essential resource in increasing awareness about gender equality, empowering women within the academic community, and reinforcing the university’s commitment to upholding women’s rights.
In addition to the distribution of IEC materials, the university illuminated its key buildings and landmarks with purple lights, symbolizing solidarity with the advocacy for women’s empowerment. The color purple, recognized globally as a symbol of justice and dignity for women, was prominently displayed to emphasize the institution’s active participation in the celebration of Women’s Month. This visual representation not only highlighted the university’s dedication to gender inclusivity but also served as a strong reminder of the ongoing fight for women’s rights and equality. The culmination of the Women’s Month celebration was a resounding success, reinforcing the university’s commitment to gender-responsive initiatives.
Through these activities, the institution continues to promote a culture of inclusivity, awareness, and empowerment, ensuring that the principles of the Magna Carta of Women are upheld within the academic community. With these initiatives, the university strengthens its advocacy for women’s rights, ensuring that the celebration of Women’s Month translates into long-term efforts toward gender equality beyond March.
