In celebration of the 74th Founding Anniversary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Sorsogon State University (SorSU) was notably honored with two prestigious Vulcan Awards by the DSWD during its Stakeholders Award Ceremony themed “Bawat Pamilya ay Mahalaga sa Bagong Pilipinas,” on May 9, 2025, at the Legazpi City Convention Center, Legazpi City, Albay.
On behalf of the University, SUC President III, Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus, together with Dr. Alfonso L. Garcia, Jr. (Dean, College of Teacher Education), proudly received the two Vulcan Awards — a testament to SorSU’s outstanding efforts and invaluable contribution to social development and public service, particularly in empowering the vulnerable and disadvantaged sectors of society.
The first Vulcan Award celebrates the academe’s pivotal role in the successful implementation of the Pantawid sa Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) for Fiscal Year 2024, supporting 4Ps families and fostering increased parental engagement in children’s education through an inclusive learning initiative.
Central to this award is the College of Teacher Education’s (CoTEd) “LOTUS 3.0 Parents Education for Child Learning Success,” an 8-week short-term course under its flagship extension program “Project LOTUS (Localized Tutorial Services).” This initiative effectively equipped 4Ps parent-participants with foundational tutorial skills, transforming them into contributing home-based learning partners and cultivating a collective commitment to learners’ academic progress.
The second Vulcan Award recognizes SorSU’s significant contribution, through the College of Technology (COT), in providing essential skills training to residents of the DSWD’s Regional Rehabilitation Center for Youth (RRCY). The training included basic electrical wiring, basic welding, and basic carpentry, enhancing the beneficiaries’ life skills and vocational competencies to better prepare them for reintegration into their families and communities.
In 2023, the College of Engineering and Architecture (CoEA) also earned a Vulcan Award for its meaningful “Tindog Kabataan – Skills Training to DSWD-Regional Rehabilitation Center for the Youth” program, a collaboration with the DSWD-RRCY in Pangpang, Sorsogon City that trained selected participants in basic construction, welding, plumbing, and electrical components.
The administration and SorSU community commend the College of Teacher Education, headed by Dean Garcia, and the College of Technology, headed by Dr. Orlando D. Doncillo (Dean, COT), for their transformative service and contribution to DSWD, reinforcing shared dedication to social responsibility and community service.
These two prestigious Vulcan Awards reaffirm the mission of the Pamantasang May Puso to transform lives and foster impactful change, inspiring continued collaboration in serving vulnerable populations and building a more inclusive and equitable society. (SorSU PIO)
