With the aim of providing platforms for academic exchanges across disciplines and strengthening collaborations with Southeast Asian higher education institutions (HEIs), Sorsogon State University (SorSU), the pioneering institution of the biennial Southeast Asian Multidisciplinary Research Expo and Extension Conference (SEAMREEC), spearheaded the international research conference for the second time, carrying the theme, “Create. Capacitate. Collaborate. Connect: Driving Global Sustainability through Multidisciplinary Research and Extension,” which runs from June 24-27, 2025, at the Sorsogon Convention Center, Sorsogon City, Sorsogon.
SUC President III, Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus, opened the conference, extending a warm welcome to esteemed guests and participants. In her welcome message, SorSU President De Jesus underscored the importance of regional collaborations through knowledge sharing that meaningfully benefits the community and society.
“We need to further strengthen and expand the prospects of potential partnerships between our organizations by creating and sharing new knowledge and technological innovations that have a significant impact on human lives, society, and the environment.”
SorSU Vice President for Research, Extension, and Training, Dr. Ryan V. Dio, announced that the conference will feature 149 paper presentations, with nine virtual presentations, and 17 poster presenters throughout the four-day event, covering multidisciplinary tracks: (1) Green Technology and Science and Technology Innovation, (2) Digital Technology and ICT, (3) Education (Instructional Materials, Teaching Strategies, and Educational Technology; Educational Leadership, Student Development, and Community Impact), (4) Agri-Fisheries and Natural Resources, (5) Business and Management, (6) Humanities and Social Science, (7) Extension.
This year’s conference recorded a total of 204 local and international participants from 51 participating institutions, including representatives from Vietnam, Malaysia, Japan, and the United States (US).
Notably, SEAMREEC 2025 highlighted keynote speeches delivered by distinguished academic figures such as Dr. Richard Marranca (PhD in Creative Arts & Educational Philosophy, New York University), Dr. Jeyaletchumi A/P Muthiah (Mathematics Education Specialist – SEAMEO RECSAM), and Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo (ASEAN Engineer; President, Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges; President, Batangas State University), respectively.
In his keynote address, “Beyond Borders: Multidisciplinary Collaboration for a Sustainable and Inclusive Future,” Dr. Marranca emphasized that what benefits the people sustains the planet. Meanwhile, Dr. Muthiah (Mathematics Education Specialist – SEAMEO RECSAM), in her speech “Educational Ecosystems for Sustainability: Reimagining Learning Frameworks in Southeast Asia,” stressed the significance of contextual, creative education, stating, “Reimagining education is not an option — it is a necessity.”
Dr. Ronquillo, in his plenary talk “Creating Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Development,” discussed the urgent need for adoptive and inclusive innovations. He remarked, “Innovation is no longer merely about creating something new. It is about applied solutions that are adaptive, generative, inclusive, and sustainable. From energy and mobility to agriculture, digital assistance, and water security — every challenge of basic day is also an opportunity to deploy smarter, more sustainable, and more inclusive innovation.”
An open forum/panel discussion followed, allowing participants to engage directly with the speakers. Overall Coordinator Prof. Frances Grace J. Jetomo provided essential details on conference mechanics, criteria, and other important announcements.
