In a meaningful step toward strengthening the quality of mathematics education, three dedicated faculty members from Sorsogon State University – Laboratory High School (SorSU-LHS) recently served as resource speakers during the Capacity Building for SPARK-ARAL Tutors and Pre-Service Teacher Volunteers. This initiative aimed to prepare future educators for their upcoming tutorial sessions by equipping them with both content mastery and practical teaching strategies.
Mr. Kristopher A. Hiloma, Ms. Ma. Luz De Jesus, and Ms. Ana Lizel Dedase shared their time and expertise with a group of enthusiastic pre-service Mathematics teachers and volunteer tutors. Each brought unique insights and techniques tailored to enhance understanding and teaching effectiveness in foundational math topics.
During the morning session, Ms. Dedase offered a refresher on the Laws of Exponents, a foundational topic often revisited in higher-level mathematics. Her session highlighted common misconceptions, clarified essential rules, and emphasized the importance of clear, consistent instruction
Ms. De Jesus followed during the afternoon session with a focused talk on Solving Quadratic Equations. Through clear explanations and engaging problem-solving strategies, she helped participants revisit key concepts while encouraging a deeper appreciation for how these equations apply in real-world contexts and classroom scenarios.
Mr. Hiloma concluded the session with a comprehensive discussion on the Laws on Radicals, breaking down complex concepts into manageable parts and offering useful techniques that participants could apply when teaching learners. His approach not only simplified the topic but also boosted the confidence of the tutors in handling such lessons.
This event not only highlights the commitment of SorSU-LHS to academic excellence but also its active role in community engagement and the nurturing of future educators. The contributions of Mr. Hiloma, Ms. De Jesus, and Ms. Dedase serve as a testament to the value of mentorship, collaboration, and the enduring power of educators to spark change — one lesson at a time.
