The National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BIOTECH) of the University of the Philippines Los Baños partnered with the Sorsogon State University (SorSU) for an “Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology Research Seminar” seminar at the Sorsogon State University-Castilla Campus, Farmer’s Training Center last August 25, 2𝟶23.
The BIOTECH’s Technology Transfer and Business Development Program, Technical Services Program (TSP), and Biotechnology for Industry, Environment, and Energy Program facilitated the partnership to foster research initiatives. The seminar formally commenced with the welcome remarks of Dr. Jhonner D. Ricafort, Vice President for Academic Affairs of Sorsogon State University, highlighting the timeliness and significance of the seminar in paving the way for more innovative research to benefit the students and the entire SorSU community.
The morning session of the seminar includes the discussion of the following: Lecture 1A: BIOTECH innovations for Agriculture, food, and feed industries through a video lecture by Dr. Ranilo P. Violanta, TTBDP, Biotech Program Leader; Lecture 2A: Human Factor in the Environment and socio-economic changes by Dr. Silvino D. Mecra, Seed Pathologist, Ag. Science and Technology Linker; Lecture 3A: Probiotics, Benefits, Applications and Production by Dr. Francisco B. Elegado, Res. Professor, BIEEP, BIOTECH; Lecture 4A: Nanobiotechnology applications in Agriculture by Dr. Lilia M. Fernando Corpuz, Assoc. Prof & Assoc. Dean for Research & Extension, CAF’s UPLB. The morning session concluded with an open forum facilitated by Ms. Belinda B. Costales, TTBDP, BIOTECH, allowing participants to ask questions related to the topics discussed by the speakers.
The afternoon session focused on talk sessions covering the following topics: Topic 5A: Alcoholic Fermentation Production by Ms. Irene G. Pajares, Univ. Researcher, BIEEP, BIOTECH; Lecture 6A: Introduction to Biosecurity in Livestock Farming by Dr. Richard D. Tambalo, Univ. Researcher, BIEEP, BIOTECH; Lecture 7A: Basic microbial enzyme production and R&D strategies by Dr. Kristine Rose M. Ramos, Univ. Researcher, BIEEP. After the Lecture A batch, the speakers again entertained questions from the participants in the open forum. Subsequently, the lecture continued with the following B Lectures: Lecture 1B: Protocols and Requirements for sample submission of various chemical test parameters before analysis by Dr. Jeffrey P. Tamayo, Univ. Researcher, CASL, BIOTECH; Lecture 2B: Food Analysis for Nutritional Labelling by Mr. Lorenzo M. Fabro Jr., Univ. Researcher, CASL, BIOTECH; Lecture 3B: Understanding cell structure through microscopy by Dr. Lorele C. Trinidad, Univ Researcher, EMSL, BIOTECH; Lecture 4B: Applications of electron microscopy in biological research by Dr. Elegado. Prof Andrew F. Detera, Campus Director, delivered the closing remarks expressing gratitude to the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (NIMBB) of the University of the Philippines Los Baños and the rest of the team for sharing their knowledge with the participants; he also acknowledged the efforts of the committees and the SorSU-CC faculty. Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus, Sorsogon State University President, graced the seminar with her presence and support, which inspired the SorSU-CC Community. Dr. De Jesus also met with the UPLB-BIOTECH Team members.
The seminar serves as a platform for cultivating the potential to identify critical baselines essential for advancing research studies, especially in Biotechnology. (SorSU Castilla Campus)
