To promote consumer empowerment and protection toward a more equitable and transparent economic environment, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Sorsogon, in partnership with Sorsogon State University (SorSU), officially launched the first-ever Enhanced Consumer Corner (“eCon-C: Empowering Consumers from every corner”) in the Province of Sorsogon, located at the SorSU-Sorsogon City Campus last November 11, 2024.
Leading the ceremonial unveiling of eCon-C were SUC President III, Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus, Ms. Ma. Lourdes D. Pancho (Provincial Director, DTI Sorsogon), PCCI-Sorsogon Representative Ms. Evelyn Mateo, and Prof. Romeo S.E. Mendoza (Director, SorSU-Business Affairs).
In her message, SorSU President De Jesus commended DTI Sorsogon for their initiative to empower consumers, highlighting that such efforts cultivate a more informed and responsible community. Dr. De Jesus likewise expressed the University’s steadfast support in disseminating eCon-C materials, affirming SorSU’s commitment to collaborating with DTI in advocating for awareness and accessibility of consumer resources.
Meanwhile, DTI Sorsogon-PD Pancho highlighted in her speech the importance of consumer awareness, including being familiar with the rights & responsibilities of consumers, protecting one’s personal information, product and services research, supporting ethical brands, and reporting unscrupulous practices. She emphasized, “Remember, as consumers, we have the power to influence the market. A well-informed consumer is the most protected consumer.”
PD Pancho also added that they will facilitate the provision of eCon-C on the other three University campuses.
PCCI Representative Evelyn Mateo, on behalf of Mr. Charles P. Clemente, III (President, Philippine Chamber of Commerce & Industry-Sorsogon) and the PCCI officers, underscored that the eCon-C will offer the community with convenient access to consumer information, e-filing of complaints, and permits for sales promotion. The PCCI Representative remarked, “This is a meaningful step toward empowering and protecting consumers in Sorsogon.”
The DTI Enhanced Consumer Corner or eCon-C provides readily accessible consumer info materials, such as information on consumer rights & responsibilities, labeling requirements, & fair-trade practices; consumer education; consumer complaints e-filing; and consumer advocacy initiatives. (SorSU PIO)
