In a bid to enhance the educational experience for its students, Sorsogon State University Castilla Campus successfully conducted a two-day Training-Workshop on Instructional Materials Design and Development on February 13-14, 2024, at the Farmers Training Center. This initiative aimed to empower faculty members with the skills needed to create effective educational resources that promote high-quality learning experiences.
Day 1
The event began with inspiring opening remarks from Dr. Rose Anne Cleotilde I. Sambo, OIC Campus Director, in lieu of Prof. Andrew F. Detera, SorSU Castilla Campus Director. Dr. Sambo emphasized the importance of developing innovative instructional materials for the university’s most important stakeholders—its students. She expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative, encouraging faculty to design resources that enhance student engagement and improve learning outcomes.
Dr. Rochele N. Aragon, Dean of the College of Agriculture, followed with an overview of the workshop’s rationale, objectives, and expected outputs. Her presentation set the direction for the two-day event, ensuring that participants were aligned with the goals of the seminar-workshop.
The first session featured Engr. Ivy B. Gonzales, Director of Research and Development at SorSU, who delivered an insightful presentation on copyright and intellectual property considerations. Engr. Gonzales emphasized the legal aspects of educational resource creation, including copyright laws, intellectual property rights, and ethical usage of multimedia content. The morning session concluded with an engaging open forum, fostering interactive discussions among participants.
In the afternoon, Dr. Aldrin John J. Estonanto engrossed the audience with his presentation on the key components of instructional design. His session covered strategic approaches to creating educational materials that are engaging, relevant, and aligned with learning objectives. Dr. Estonanto highlighted the significance of understanding learners’ needs and catering to diverse learning styles through well-structured content and innovative multimedia elements.
Day 2
Day two delved into advanced topics in instructional materials design, beginning with Dr. Estonanto’s comprehensive presentation on the publishing process, including obtaining an ISBN and scholarly dissemination. He shared his firsthand experience of authoring his book, “Simplified Calculus for Senior High School Students”, offering practical tips and guidance for aspiring educators interested in academic publishing.
The afternoon sessions were dedicated to the presentation and critiquing of outputs, where selected faculty members showcased their instructional materials. This collaborative environment allowed for constructive feedback and iterative refinement, ensuring the development of high-quality educational resources.
The two-day seminar-workshop concluded with Dr. Oscar Peter D. Pascual, Program Chair of BSABE, delivering heartfelt closing remarks. He expressed his renewed enthusiasm and gratitude to the speakers and organizers for their invaluable contributions to the success of the event.
The Training-Workshop on Instructional Materials Design and Development proved to be an impactful platform for faculty members, combining theoretical knowledge with practical applications.
