FEATURED STORY: SorSU launches the Sorsogon Bamboo Research Center

Aimed at becoming the premiere hub for innovation and commercialization of Bamboo and its products in Sorsogon and beyond, the Sorsogon State University (SorSU) through the Castilla Campus launched the Sorsogon Bamboo Research Center (SBRC) and the Office of the Pili & Bamboo Managers on May 25, 2023 at the Castilla Campus Grounds.

Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus, University President, expressed the vital roles of the Research Centers for the university and its stakeholders. The centers will increase mobility of the university to solidify existing projects and propose for more to be able to cater the needs of the community. Dr. Ryan V. Dio, Vice-President for Research, Extension and Training emphasized also the role of Castilla Campus to strengthen the Pili and Bamboo Centers especially in production and generation of knowledge through research, training, and extension activities.

The ceremonial launching was graced by the Head of the Provincial Agriculturist, Dr. Ma. Teresa Destura, representing Hon. Isagani Mendoza is Municipal Administrative Officer Atty. Marilyn Valino, Hon. City Veterinarian Dr. Alexander Destura, representing Hon. Alvin Camacho is Hon. Venerando Asejo Jr. — all expressed their message of support and commitment to Sorsogon State University in realizing goals and aspirations for the improvement of the Bamboo Industry in Sorsogon.

Mr. Andrew F. Detera, Castilla Campus Director expressed his gratitude to the university for the trust given to the campus for the establishment of the two centers; he also acknowledged the efforts of the committees, and the research center managers, Engr. Oscar Peter D. Pascual (PiliPINAS Center) and Ms. Cristy T. Jintalan (Sorsogon Bamboo Research Center).

The event will be beneficial for students because it will cater varying exposures as future managers and scientists and nigo weavers of mayon, hoping to contribute in sustaining the mayon river and pili river watershed.

After the program, a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Research Center Managers Office and the SBRC site were witnessed by the University officials, Castilla Campus Workforce, Guests and Students. (SorSU Castilla Campus Official Facebook Page)
