PIG-GALING Quiz Bee: Cultivating Knowledge in Swine Production at SorSU Castilla

On September 11, 2024, Sorsogon State University (SorSU) Castilla Campus hosted the “PIG-GALING Quiz Bee,” a dynamic event focused on swine production. Held at the Meat Processing Building, the competition aimed to deepen students’ understanding of the industry while sharpening their critical and analytical thinking skills. The quiz bee was organized by the SorSU Castilla Animal Science Faculty and drew participants from various academic programs, including BSA Crop Science, Animal Science, Agricultural Education, and Agricultural Technology.

Ms. Genly M. Gonzales opened the event by explaining the mechanics, outlining the three rounds—Easy, Average, and Difficult—each containing multiple-choice, identification, and computation questions. The atmosphere was charged with excitement as students tackled a wide range of topics related to swine production. Dr. Rose Anne Cleotilde I. Sambo served as the quiz master, ensuring a fair and competitive environment. The top three scorers would advance to additional training for the upcoming Regional Level competition.

After intense rounds of competition, Ahnan L. Habitchuela (BAT-4B) claimed first place with an impressive 52 points. Milaena Khristen E. Sabado (BSA CS-2B) secured second place, and Jesus Lester B. Dilampasig (BAT-4A) won a tiebreaker to take third place. Each participant received a certificate of participation, recognizing their dedication and hard work. The winners will now represent SorSU Castilla Campus at the Agri Youth Congress AT1-ITCPH Quiz Bee in Lipa, Batangas, on October 24, 2024.

In an interview after his win, Ahnan L. Habitchuela shared his approach to the upcoming regional competition, emphasizing the importance of studying and preparation. The event was not just a celebration of academic excellence but also a platform for students to develop essential skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving—critical for both their academic and professional journeys.

The “PIG-GALING Quiz Bee” demonstrated the value of intellectual competitions in enhancing students’ knowledge while preparing them for real-world challenges. As they move forward, these students carry with them not only the knowledge gained but also the camaraderie built through this enriching experience.
