The student leaders of different organizations assemble for a Pep Talk on the Blood Letting Activity at SorSU-Bulan Campus Social Hall, November 15, 2023. The event was organized by the College Red Cross Youth Council led by Prof. Rytzz O. Obsum, Officer-in Charge of the Student Development Services, and the Campus Nurse, Ma’am Amelyn G. Gonzales.
Various organizations from Sorsogon State University – Bulan Campus were the participants of the PEP Talk on Bloodletting Activity.
Further, the PEP Talk entails preparations and cautions to be taken by participants before the bloodletting.
Nurse II, Joanna Faye S. Andador, RN discussed the procedures for blood donation, notifying all interested and eligible blood donors in today’s PEP TALK held at SorSU-BC social. Nurse Andador highlighted the value of self-deferral, enabling the students to assess themselves if they are eligible to partake in blood letting activity.
Following the opening message from Prof. Rytzz O. Obsum, OIC, Student Development Service, Nurse 2, Michelle Gaupo, RN, shares the significance and benefits of donating blood.
Discussing things to know before donating blood, she emphasizes, “Kapag magdo-donate, dapat ay prepared physically and mentally.” She also expresses, “It feels good to donate” and outlines the benefits of donating blood:
– You receive a free checkup.
– It lowers the risk of stroke.
– It reduces the chances of a heart attack.
– It enhances the production of red blood cells.
– Reduces the risk of cancer.
– It lowers cholesterol.
– Improves circulation.
– Prevents iron accumulation.
She provides a list to determine if an individual is eligible to donate:
Age:
– 18-60 years old
– 16-17 with parental consent
– 60-65 for regular donors
Weight:
– 50kg and above
Blood pressure:
– 160/100mmHg <90/60
Pulse rate:
– 60 to 100 beats/minute
Hemoglobin:
– Male: 13.5g/dl and above
– Female: 12.5g/dl and above
Sex/gender:
– All
Food:
– Avoid a heavy fat meal 1 hour before donation
Fluid intake:
– No restrictions
– No smoking 1 hour before donation
Donating blood helps save and extend the lives of others, especially those in need during surgery. This makes a positive impact on the community, fostering a sense of shared responsibility for one another.
