SorSU Castilla Campus holds 1st College of Agriculture Students’ Research Symposium 2024

The Sorsogon State University- Castilla Research and Development Services Office in collaboration with the newly established College of Agriculture held the 1st College of Agriculture Students’ Research Symposium 2024 on June 11, 2024, at the Farmer’s Training Center, Mayon, Castilla, Sorsogon.

The symposium featured 13 research papers and 21 poster presentations from fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Agriculture students majoring in Animal Science and Crop Science. The students showcased their undergraduate theses which hold significant potential for the advancement of agricultural research and innovation in the community. The papers focused on the priority commodities of the province such as swine, poultry, pili, root crops, bamboo and other high value crops.


The event formally commenced with warm welcome remarks from Prof. Andrew F. Detera, the Campus Director of SorSU Castilla. It was followed by the reading of the rationale of the activity and the introduction of the resource speaker by the Research and Development Services Coordinator, Mr. Brian Gabriel J. Buenaobra.


Prof. Jezzabie G. Gamis, the Intellectual Property and Technology Business Management Director of the university, delivered an empowering message as the resource speaker emphasizing the importance of agriculture in the country particularly in achieving food security. With her immense experience as a researcher in food industry and academia, Prof. Gamis also highlighted the value of protecting the products which resulted from agricultural research through proper adherence to patenting and copyright policies in the country. Furthermore, Prof. Gamis lauded all the student participants for all their hard work, determination, and ingenuity in producing research which can further boost the agricultural sector of the country.


Afterwards, the activity proceeded to the research and poster presentation proper which started with the laying out of the guidelines and mechanics by the International Relations Coordinator and Lady of Ceremony, Ms. Mari Anne Gojar. Ms. Gojar also introduced the panel of evaluators for the poster presentations who are all licensed agriculturists; from the City Agriculture Office: Ms. Suzette B. Escanilla, Mr. Christopher P. Rellora, Ms. Joanne G. Dogayo, and Ms. Medilina E. Fernando, and from the Municipal Agriculture Office of Castilla, Ms. Merlinda Aliven Daep. For the paper presentations, the evaluators were Dr. Rochele N. Aragon (College Dean and Animal Science thesis coordinator), Prof. Jerome M. Llabres (Program Chair-BSA), Prof. Jobert C. Arcilla (Program Chair-BSAB), Prof. Mary Ann P. Caro (Program Chair-BSAB), Dr. Oscar Peter D. Pascual (Crop Science Coordinator) Prof. Nestor Ebuenga (Animal Science) and Dr. Rose Anne Cleotilde I. Sambo (Animal Science).


The program concluded with the awarding of Certificates of Appreciation and Participation. The winners received Certificates of Recognition and cash prizes for their outstanding achievement in the competition. The College of Agriculture Dean, Dr. Rochele Aragon, commended all the student participants, advisers, working committees and the admin staff for the success of the symposium. Dr. Aragon encouraged the students to continue their pursuit of generation of new knowledge and creating innovative technologies in the field of agriculture in their professional career.
