SorSU Castilla Campus Hosts Professorial Lecture and Field Visit of Dr. Edo Andriesse from Seoul National University, South Korea

On April 15, 2024, Sorsogon State University Castilla Campus proudly welcomed Dr. Edo Andriesse, an International Visiting Lecturer and Researcher and a Full Professor from Seoul National University, South Korea. His visit led to a significant exchange of knowledge and experiences, fostering a platform for international collaboration and catalyzing academic growth within the university.

The event commenced with a warm welcome extended by Prof. Andrew F. Detera, Campus Director, setting an intellectually stimulating tone for the session ahead. Ms. Mari Anne B. Gojar, Coordinator of the International Relations Office (IRO) Castilla Campus, formally introduced Dr. Andriesse, highlighting his academic and professional achievements. She underscored the profound significance of his research work on coastal governance, rural development, spatial inequality, local politics, poverty dynamics, and seaweed farming in Southeast Asia and the Global South.

In his lecture attended by faculty and students, Dr. Andriesse explored his extensive work on rural inequality in Southeast Asia, offering insightful comparisons of exclusion and coping mechanisms prevalent among farming and fishing communities. The discussion shed light on the complex dynamics shaping rural economies and communities, fascinating the audience with his depth of knowledge and expertise.
An interactive open forum followed, allowing participants to engage in a dialogue and further analyze the topics presented. Dr. Rochele N. Aragon, Dean of the College of Agriculture, delivered the closing remarks. She emphasized the importance of international collaboration in achieving academic excellence and addressing the complex societal challenges faced by rural communities.

In the afternoon, the exchange continued with a field visit to the campus, providing Dr. Andriesse with firsthand exposure to the diverse facilities, laboratories, areas, and best practices. Joined by Dr. Vivien L. Chua (IRO Director) and Dr. Richard V. Dumilag (IRO Coordinator of Sorsogon City Campus), the visit concluded with the symbolic planting of pili seedlings – fostering global connections and supporting sustainable development initiatives.
