To mark their significant transition from students to practitioners in the field of midwifery and reinforce their dedication to the profession, Sorsogon State University’s Bachelor of Science in Midwifery program commemorated its 2nd Pinning and Candle Lighting Ceremonies for 72 SorSUeno 2nd-year Bachelor of Science in Midwifery (BSM) students on December 13, 2024, at the SorSU Audio-Visual Hall, Sorsogon City Campus.
Bearing the theme, “Student Midwives Embarking on Beginnings: Radiance in the Flare Compassionate Care,” the ceremonies began with the procession of students with their parents/guardians, SorSU officials, faculty members, and non-teaching personnel.
Dr. Jhonner D. Ricafort (Vice President for Academic Affairs) highlighted in his welcome remarks that midwifery is not merely a profession; it is a calling — a profound commitment to supporting and nurturing life during its most transformative moments.
VPAA Ricafort encouraged the participants, “To our student midwives, embrace the path ahead, hold your heads high, and step bravely into this noble profession. Be competent practitioners and carry with you the core values of the university when you serve wherever you go.”
In her inspirational message, SUC President III, Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus, shared that the University considers the inclusion of the pinning and candle-lighting ceremony just two years ago as one of the significant milestones it achieved to upgrade the midwifery program. SorSU President De Jesus added that although all these are purely symbolic, they signify the students’ steady progress in the pathway leading toward achieving their academic degree.
SorSU President underscored, “The pin you will receive this day and wear on your uniforms, the steady flame of the candle you hold, and soon, the cap on your heads — are emblems that shall proudly proclaim to the world your noble profession.”
“As a final word, I express my hopes for you in the coming years: in my heart of hearts, I foresee you completing your studies, graduating and receiving your diplomas, and successfully passing the licensure examination. And then, the broad horizon of opportunities opens to you with employment here in our country and even abroad. At that time, I will wish for your success, contentment, and happiness in your future professions and careers.”
Meanwhile, Angela H. Cruz (2nd-year BSM student) led the address of petition while Ms. Mary Anne Frances D. Reyes (Dean, Midwifery Program) facilitated the acceptance of the address of petition. Afterward, Ms. Reyes presented the candidates for the ceremonies.
The pinning ceremony, one of the event’s highlights, was overseen by the Dean of the Midwifery Program and assisted by the Midwifery faculty and parents/guardians. Ms. Genevieve F. Rojas (Level 1 Adviser) facilitated the candle lighting ceremony, while the Midwife’s Pledge was led by Ms. Jerica D. Latonero (Student Midwives’ Association Adviser).
Following the closing message of Dr. Alfonso L. Garcia, Jr. (Dean, College of Teacher Education and Midwifery), the 2nd-year BSM students expressed their gratitude to their parents/guardians by offering them stems of red roses, symbolizing the formers’ deep appreciation for their unconditional support and sacrifices, which fostered a heartwarming atmosphere during the event. Prior to the ceremonies was a thanksgiving mass officiated by Rev. Fr. Gerico T. Pangilinan. (SorSU PIO)
