To further cultivate self-awareness guided by the University HEART values, improve gender sensitivity and inclusive communication highlighting the SOGIESC concept and Gender-Fair Language, as well as strengthen leadership skills and collaboration, Sorsogon State University – Human Resource Management and Development Office (HRMDO), in collaboration with the SorSU – Office of the Gender and Development (GAD) and the College of Technology through the initiative of faculty member Mr. Gerry G. Elegado, successfully engaged the COT faculty members in a two-day HEART & Harmony GADventures in Empowerment and Growth event, held from January 13-14, 2025, at the SorSU Audio-Visual Hall, Sorsogon City Campus.
The activity formally kicked off with an inspiring lecture called Anchored in HEART: Building Values, Self-Awareness, & Work-Life Balance, delivered by Rev. Fr. Jershom Colico. In his presentation, Fr. Colico emphasized the four signs of a dynamic Christian: (1) Prayer; (2) Study; (3) Generosity; and (4) Evangelization, while relating his discussion to the SorSU Core Values of Humility, Excellence, Accountability, Resiliency, and Trustworthiness.
Additionally, representatives from the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) provided a brief talk on insurance policies and guidelines. The afternoon lecture of Day 1 featured a comprehensive discussion on the Basics of SOGIESC and Gender-Fair Language led by Prof. Gretchen Bilasano Millena, educating the participants on the key concepts and issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sex characteristics. The lecture served as an avenue to overcome misconceptions and stereotypes surrounding SOGIESC, highlighting the importance of gender sensitivity and gender awareness.
Meanwhile, Day 2 centered on the talk session titled Fostering Unity: Building Leadership and Strong Connection by Dr. Marylendra Penetrante, which covered essential topics, such as leadership & connection, mastering connection, and secrets to working joyfully. It also included interactive activities and dance exercises that encouraged active participation, empowering the participants to share personal insights and experiences.
The session concluded on a heartwarming note, with the COT faculty members exchanging free hugs, fostering a sense of solidarity and inclusivity among the attendees. In addition, selected participants shared key takeaways, reflecting on their new learnings throughout the two-day seminar-training.
The HEART & Harmony GADventures in Empowerment and Growth event is designed to provide a comprehensive training program that highlights personal growth, gender sensitivity, and leadership development.
