SorSU inks Memorandum of Understanding of academic and educational cooperation with University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB)

In the continuous efforts to improve and develop its mandates along with strengthening linkages, SorSU actively took part in the ceremonial signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) at the Executive Conference Room, Office of the Chancellor, UPLB last December 7, 2023. 

It was attended by SorSU officials namely President Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus, Dr. Jhonner D. Ricafort (Vice President for Academic Affairs), and Dr. Ryan V. Dio (Vice President for Research, Extension, and Training), alongside attendees from UPLB namely; Chancellor Dr. Jose V. Camacho Jr., Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Agham C. Cuevas, Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs Roberto P. Cereno, Dr. Rowena dT. Baconguis, (Dean of UPLB-College of Public Affairs and Development-CPAf), Dr. Elpidio M. Agbisit, Jr. (Dean, UPLB-College of Agriculture and Food Science-CAFS), Assoc. Prof. Lilia M. Fernando-Corpuz (Associate Dean for Research and Extension – CAFS), Prof. Greg T. Pawilen (Director, Office for Institutional Development in Higher Education), Prof. Jenielyn T. Padrones (Program Coordinator, Office for Institutional Development in Higher Education), Asst. Prof. Samantha Geraldine G. De Los Santos (Assistant to the Dean, UPLB-CPAf), Asst. Prof. Aileen V. Lapitan (Director, Center for Strategic Planning and Policy Studies UPLB-CPAf), Assoc. Prof. Agustin L. Arcenas (Director, Community Innovations Studies Center-CPAf), and Asst. Prof. Maria Luz L. Malabayabas (Head, Knowledge Management Office,UPLB-CPAf).

For the opening message, UPLB Chancellor, Dr. Jose V. Camacho Jr. welcomed SorSU and Silliman University and expressed his appreciation for both universities in attendance. He later shared the work UPLB has done in terms of partnerships in regional, national and international scale. Further, he acknowledged how SorSU is actively pursuing sustainable campus projects and hopes to come up with similar activities.

“We are so happy that we are making a bold step in making this partnership agreement a reality. I would think that this is one of the best Christmas gifts that we can give to our institution, stakeholders and constituents. We really value these partnerships because these shows how seriously we are responding to our mission as the national university.” shared the Chancellor, Dr. Camacho.

Before the formal signing of the MOU were messages from the partner institutions, starting with Dr. Betty C. McCann, President of Silliman University (SU) and followed by SorSU President, Dr. De Jesus. 

In her speech, Dr. De Jesus expressed her gratitude to UPLB for helping the University realize the dream to establish linkage with the top University of the country. She  mentioned that Dr. Camacho had once visited SorSU a few years ago with the purpose of forging collaborative programs and projects – these gestures have even magnified SorSU’s stronger commitment with the partnership and how it can aid in the University’s research, extension, training and instruction pursuits.

After the series of warm messages, the MOU signing commenced starting with SU, followed by SorSU – solidifying academic and educational cooperation.

In closing, Dr. Rowena dT. Baconguis, Dean of the College of Public Affairs and Development shared that this is the 80th partnership that UPLB has conducted from different SUCs and HEIs along with those of the private sectors. She stated the importance of such partnership and relayed the various possibilities and linkages through this MOU signing.

“Partnership is very important as we move into the fourth and fifth digital revolution… Through our collaborative efforts, we can improve our standing in the international community not only for higher education but also for our primary and secondary school education. It is very important that we work together” Dr. Boncoguis ended her remarks by quoting Dr. McCann of SU, “We can move forward through the three Ps: Peace, Passion and Possibilities.”
