Emphasizing its dedication to gender equality and an inclusive society, Sorsogon State University – Office of the Gender and Development (SorSU-GAD) officially kicked off its National Women’s Month Celebration 2025 with an opening program held at the SorSU AV Hall on March 10, 2025.
The event, themed “WE for Gender Equality and Inclusive Society” with the sub-theme, “Babae sa Lahat ng Sektor, Aangat ang Bukas sa Bagong Pilipinas,” commenced with welcome remarks from Ms. Glady Joy M. Mella (GAD Coordinator, Sorsogon City Campus).
SUC President III, Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus delivered an inspiring message, highlighting the achievements of Filipinas and the recognition they earned in our country and even abroad. She emphasized how women are increasingly visible in professions, workplaces, and institutions that were previously dominated by men.
Furthermore, President De Jesus reinforced the university’s commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, and empowering environment for all genders. “We can proudly claim that all genders are relatively safe within our university,“ she said.
The keynote speaker, Ms. Aurora Chavez-De Guzman, (Chairperson, Regional Gender and Development Committee (RGADC)/Executive Director, Malayang Lapian ng mga Kababaihan, Inc. (MALAYA KA), shared her valuable insights on gender equality and the importance of empowering women across all sectors. In her speech she remarked, “The journey toward women’s empowerment requires our collective commitment and collaboration. Let’s increase women’s participation in decision-making processes and work together to ensure women have equal access to opportunities.”
The event included a cultural show with performances from the Dance Theater and Cultural Group and SorSU Arnisador. The program concluded with a call to action and closing remarks by Ms. Riche Justine P. Duran (GAD Director), encouraging continued efforts toward gender equality and inclusivity.
