Competing against other premier secondary institutions in the country, Maemi Maria Philippe J. Renovalles, a Grade 7 student of Sorsogon State University – Laboratory High School (SorSU-LHS), astoundingly seized the silver medal during the ASIAROPE Olympiad 2023 – National Round 2: Mathematics (Category 4), held online via Zoom meeting last August 27, 2023 — thus qualifying in the International Round as part of the Philippine Team to represent the country in the prestigious international competition, to be held in Hongkong, from May 25-27, 2024.
Renovalles, triumphing over other contenders under Category 4 – Primary 6 and Secondary 1 (Grades 6 & 7), including Philippine Science High School Campuses, Cabatuan Central Elementary School, and Stonyhurst Southville International School – Batangas, among others, was hailed victoriously as Rank 1 in Category 4 and topped as a silver medalist in the National Qualifying Round 2.
The national qualifying round, held online, was comprised of two rounds. The first round was organized last June 2023, whereas the second round was conducted to provide another chance to participate for those who were unable to join due to certain circumstances. In Maemi’s case, since she was not yet enrolled in high school last June 2023 and did not have a school to represent, she was able to join the second round of the competition.
The 90-minute online examination started at 1:00 pm and ended at 2:30 pm, requiring the contestants to submit their test before the time lapses. Moreover, the test was accompanied by a remote proctoring system, in which access to contestants’ cameras & access to share screen (entire screen) were also required. As per guidelines, contestants were required to use two gadgets during the exam. Switching or toggling screen tabs, browsing online sites, opening of social media sites, and such (detectable) were likewise strictly prohibited. Further, the auto-recorded video was also evaluated after the examination, wherein unnecessary actions were discouraged as they may lead to disqualifications.
Meanwhile, Maemi’s Coach, Mr. Kristopher Hiloma (CoTEd Faculty Member), began training her prior to the formal opening of classes in SorSU-LHS, from 5:00-7:00 pm for three weeks.
In reference, the ASIAROPE Olympiad is an international competition in Mathematics, Science, and English Journalism for Primary Levels (Grades 1 to 6), Secondary Levels (Secondary 1 to 4), and Senior Secondary Levels (Grades 11 & 12), which aims to promote excellence and proficiency in Mathematics, Science & Technology, and English Journalism through friendly global competitions and foster tourism of and for Asia and Europe.
As a medalist, Maemi is qualified to be part of the Philippine Team to represent the country in the ASIAROPE Olympiad 2023 – Final/International Round in 2024.
