The NSTP Unit of Sorsogon State University (SorSU) Magallanes Campus (SorSU-MC) organized a two-day field immersion in Prieto Diaz, Sorsogon, on Friday and Saturday, November 29-30, 2024. The event was participated by 546 first-year students from various programs, including BS Fisheries, BS Marine Biology, BS Entrepreneurship, BSED Sciences, and BEED.

The immersion activity was spearheaded by Mr. Emer F. Espano, the NSTP Coordinator, along with Subject Coordinators and Implementers Mr. Michael H. Galapon, Ms. Julie Ann H. Honrubia, Mr. Arvin H. Andes, Mr. Edward V. Pepano, and Mr. Gian Carlo R. Malto. Other faculty members accompanying the students include Ms. Joycelyn D. Labalan, Ms. Jinky D. Bailon, Mr. Renato Cayetano, Jr., Ms. Glicelda E. Perol, Mr. Robert G. Buban, Ms. Johnne Erika O. Famorcan, Ms. Shaira Mendones, Mr. Elden G. Orgela, and Ms. Maryrose Gabuyo.


Themed “Raising Environmental Awareness through Community-Based Immersion,” the activity aimed to educate students on the environmental conservation efforts of the local community in Prieto Diaz. The town is recognized as one of the most favorable sites for mangrove and marine conservation. The event sought to instill social responsibility among students, emphasizing the importance of environmental sustainability and the role of individuals in protecting local and global ecosystems. Furthermore, the activity aimed to inspire students to continue advocating for environmental protection throughout their academic and professional careers.


The two-day immersion featured a variety of activities focused on environmental education and hands-on conservation efforts. The students attended sessions led by Mr. Oriculo D. Despuig Jr., the Municipal Tourism Officer, who explained the benefits of the 1,034-hectare mangrove forest and its importance as a habitat for various marine species. Mr. Joselito Domdom, a member of SEAMANCORE, also contributed to the event by sharing his knowledge on mangrove conservation and guiding the students on a tour of the mangrove seed site.


Other activities included a simultaneous clean-up drive, mangrove harvesting, and packing. In the evening, the students participated in the Search for Ms. “Trashionshow,” a pageant where participants showcased outfits made from recycled materials, highlighting the themes of reusing, reducing, and recycling. The winners of the pageant were:

  • Ms. NSTP Q&A and Best in Trashionshow: Nathaniel “Yna” Anonuevo
  • First Runner-Up and “Voice for Change”: Edrian Garilao
  • Second Place: Jose Marie Esperida

In an interview, Mr. Emer F. Espano emphasized the significance of teamwork and collaboration with community members. He noted that such activities allow students to develop an appreciation for service and the importance of making a positive impact in their communities. He also highlighted that students were required to submit activity sheets and accomplishment reports, focusing on their key takeaways, particularly on how they can contribute to the protection and preservation of marine life.
