Among the 26 selected Filipino university officials and personnel in the entire country, Sorsogon State University (SorSU) – Sports, Culture & Arts OIC Head, Mr. Richard Kevin Espedido, and SorSU-Bulan Campus Sports Coordinator, Ms. Charmaine Janoras were selected as recipients of CHED’s scholarship under its Higher Education Upskilling and Study for Advancement of Staff and Faculty (HUSAY) and successfully completed the two-week training course program entitled, “Organizing Major Sports Events and Promoting Sports Tourism” conducted by the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) from November 24 – December 8, 2024, in Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi, Malaysia.
Themed “Bringing Sports Alive,” the two-week short course program was designed to upskill and reskill the capacities of the participants in organizing and managing major sports events and sports tourism at the local, regional, and international levels, where the selected participants immersed in several forum sessions and collaborative activities focused on sports organizations, roles and functions of sports organizing committee, networking & partnering for sports events, and sports tourism, to name a few.
Serving as the highlight/culmination of the short course training and validating their learned skills and practical experience, the participants themselves were involved in the preparations and implementation of the Langkawi International Half Marathon held at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Center, which was joined by more than 4,200 runners from 26 countries (data from the CHED).
Following the successful two-week training program, SorSU faculty-participants Mr. Espedido (OIC Head, Sports, Culture and Arts) and Ms. Janoras (Sports Coordinator, Bulan Campus) were awarded certificates of program completion on sports management and sports tourism from UKM.
In addition, the 20 Philippine Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) selected by the CHED are those that have hosted major sports competitions, including Palarong Pambansa, State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA), Private Schools Athletic Associations (PRISAA), and other regional/national sports events.
