In the wake of Typhoon Kristine, the spirit of volunteerism has taken center stage at Sorsogon State University (SorSU) as students and faculty come together to support those affected by the storm. Led by the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Director, Prof. Saturnino C. Carranza and volunteers, including the Kalasag ng SorSU Student Volunteers, General Services & Maintenance Director, Dr. Christopher C. Jaramiel, College of Technology Dean, Dr. Orlando D. Doncillo, members of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), Technology Student Council officers and some NSTP students, the first phase of the cleaning operation was undertaken. This activity aims to restore the campus after the severe weather caused significant disruption, with volunteers actively removing debris and assessing damages.
In addition to the cleaning initiatives, a feeding program has been organized for evacuees affected by the typhoon. Sponsored by top executives and officers, the program aims to provide much-needed nourishment to those displaced by the storm.
Sorsogon City Mayor Ma. Ester E. Hamor has also contributed by supplying three kilos of rice and P100.00 for each evacuee, demonstrating strong local support. Approximately 218 evacuees from Barangay Salog, along with 8 members of the university cleaning services group and other recipients, received assistance from the City Mayor.
A SorSU canteen concessionaire further showcased solidarity with the university community by providing rice porridge for the evacuees, adding to the collective effort to support those in need. Likewise, SorSUenos in various ways have reached out to help ease the impact of the storm through donations in cash and kind.
As these initiatives continue, the Pamantasang May Puso remains committed to fostering a spirit of volunteerism and community resilience, working hand in hand to ensure the well-being of all affected by Typhoon Kristine. (SorSU PIO)
